The character of Joanna Todd was created by Sarah Orne Jewett in her landmark book about Maine coastal life, “The Country of Pointed Firs.” I imagined what this odd character’s life was like in her self-exile on a small island.
I created these images as a resident of The Golden Apple Art Residency in Harrington, Maine. The images and content were influenced by my sketches and long walks there. The binding is a dos rapporteur style in leather with platinum tooling and impressed and embedded plant material from the grounds.
The following images are a selection from the entire book.
This collection of paintings explore the ideas of extinction in all of it’s forms: prehistoric, historic, globally and personally. It started out as an expression of concern over the rapidly increasing dangers of climate change. It has grown to include imagery that relates to human selection, categorization and intervention. All of these paintings are mixed media on paper.
This project is a collaboration between two artists living in the same city one hundred and seventeen years apart. I found Fred Foss’ copy book in a local antique shop. The only information it contained was his name and that he got his book at St. Peter’s School on December 15, 1898. I was charmed by his sketches and doodles and decided to pair them with images from my own sketchbooks.
I rebound the book in the montage sur onglets form in buffalo leather. The cover decoration was created with blind tooling and inset leather strips.
The following spreads are a selection from the entire book.
These books are some of the bindings I have created in
my course work at The American Academy of Booking.
My sketchbooks are one of the most essential components in my creative process. They function not only as sketchbook but, journal, photo album, mood board, calendar and scrapbook. I like using books with a bit of history left in them which is why I gravitate to antique ledgers, but I occasionally want a particular size, shape or paper surface and then I make my own.
I work in my sketchbook in random page order and take my time in them. Each lasts a couple of years. I often refer to them to find some scrap of relevant inspiration.
